Tax, registration & B-BBEE
What is a PBO, and how is it different from an NPO?
A PBO is a tax status from SARS, not a registration or a legal form — it sits on top of whichever one an organisation already has (NPC, trust or voluntary association, usually alongside an NPO registration), and it exempts the organisation's own income where its activities qualify. Being an NPO does not automatically make an organisation a PBO; PBO status is its own separate application to SARS.
